September Audience Shares: German Free TV Stations Show Vigorous Gains, Substantial Lead over RTL Stations in Trend for Year


Unterföhring, October 1, 2008. The German Free TV group of stations, including Sat.1, ProSieben, kabel eins and N24, earned an outstanding 31.3 percent audience share in September (RTL stations: 28.3 percent), a gain of 2.8 percentage points over the August figure and 2.1 percentage points against the figure for September of last year.
The third quarter was also very successful. The stations earned an aggregate 29.9 percent share (RTL stations: 29.3 percent), up 0.7 percentage points against the second quarter and 0.6 percentage points above the figure for Q3 2007. Thus in the trend for the year, Sat.1, ProSieben, kabel eins and N24 have not only a very good 29.2 percent aggregate share, but remain well ahead of the RTL Groups German stations, which have 26.6 percent.

The station-by-station details:
Sat.1 boosted its share of the young audience for the third time in a row in September, to reach 11.2 percent a gain of 0.4 percentage points against August and 0.5 percentage points against September 2007. The Berlin station earned a 10.9 percent share for the third quarter, a gain of 0.2 percentage points against the same period last year.
ProSieben was the biggest gainer in September, with a 12.5 percent share, equivalent to a one-percentage-point rise against a year earlier. No other TV station increased its monthly share so much. ProSieben also closed out the third quarter up 0.1 percentage point against a year earlier, with an 11.6 percent share.
At kabel eins, September brought a repeat of Julys record 6.0 percent share. These two top months also accounted for the stations best quarter ever: kabel eins closed out Q3 with a 5.9 percent share.
N24 earned an outstanding 1.4 percent share in September, picking up 0.1 percentage point from August and 0.3 percentage points against the same month last year. The Number One News Station also made gains for the third quarter, adding 0.1 percentage point against last years figure to reach a 1.3 percent share.
