ProSiebenSat.1 Group Earns 30.6 Percent Audience Share in September

Munich, September 30, 2005. In September the ProSiebenSat.1 Groups four stations boosted their high audience shares of the past year and the prior month. With a combined Group result of 30.6 percent, Sat.1, ProSieben, kabel eins and N24 reached the Groups best September results in company history (Sep. 04: 30.4 percent; Aug. 05: 30.3 percent).

Sat.1, ProSieben, kabel eins and N24 also increased their combined results significantly both for the third quarter and for the first nine months of the year. The four stations picked up a substantial 1.9 percentage points in the third quarter, to earn a combined share of 30.2 percent the Groups best third-quarter showing ever. Between January and September 2005, the four stations added 1.3 percentage points to their share to reach 30.4 percent (all figures are for viewers age 14 to 49).

Sat.1 added 0.5 percentage points to its September 2005 share against a year earlier, earning 12.3 percent (Sept. 04: 11.8 percent; Aug. 05: 12.2 percent). The figure was the stations highest September share since 1999. The Sat.1 News, with shares as high as 18.9 percent, had its highest figures since August 2002. The new comedy series Pastewka got off to a successful start at 20.0 percent. Verliebt in Berlin (up to 26.4 percent) and Schillerstrasse (up to 19.5 percent) also scored well with viewers again.

ProSiebens September share was 11.5 percent (Sept. 04: 12.6 percent; Aug. 05: 11.5 percent). The U.S. series Desperate Housewives (up to 18.8 percent) and Lost (up to 15.2 percent) brought the stations high shares. Both were continued this month with the new series of the first season. Other ratings highlights included Tsunami (26,4%), Die TV total Bundestagswahl (18.7 percent) and the blockbusters I Spy (21.2 percent) and Reign of Fire (16.9 percent).

Earning its best September figure, 5.8 percent, since it first went on the air in 1992, kabel eins gained ground against both the prior year and the prior month (Sept. 04: 5.5 percent; Aug. 05: 5.6 percent). It wasnt just reliable performers like Missing (up to 10.0 percent) that drew audiences. As on the other stations, the new fall programming scored high on Kabel 1. The two on-the-beat policewomen Katja und Heide brought in shares of up to 7.4 percent.

N24 remained on track for success in September. The news station matched its August record high of 1.0 percent, and thus doubled its figure from a year earlier (Sept. 04: 0.5 percent; Aug. 05: 1.0 percent). Thus N24 once again outperformed its competitor n-tv (Sept. 05: 0.8 percent).

Sat.1 was again the clear winner here with an result of 12.1 percent, improving 1.1 percentage points on its results from the year before. No other German station was able to improve its third-quarter ratings so significantly. Once again Sat.1 profited from the ongoing success of its telenovela Verliebt in Berlin. But Hollywood films like Sister Act (17.8 percent) and commissioned productions like Das Zimmermädchen und der Millionär (17.4 percent) also drew large audiences.

ProSiebens third-quarter share was 11.4 percent, compared to 11.7 percent a year earlier. Among its biggest successes were Sarah & Marc in Love Die Hochzeit des Jahres with figures as high as 23.4 percent, and the blockbusters The Transporter (25.8 percent) and Blow (22.5 percent).

Share figures for kabel eins were up again in the third quarter. The station was up 0.6 percentage points, to 5.7 percent, against the comparable quarter (Q3 04: 5.1 percent). Among the ratings highlights were K1 Magazin, which steadily brought in high shares of up to 9.6 percent, Reklame! (up to 9.1 percent) and the stations Crime Friday, with such series as Missing (up to 10.0 percent).

News station N24 doubled its share from 0.5 percent to 1.0 percent, and thus enjoyed a substantial lead over its competitor n-tv (0.8 percent) for the third quarter as well.

Sat.1 gained 0.8 percentage points to reach 12.2 percent (Jan.-Sept. 04: 11.4 percent). Among the contributors to this substantial rise in ratings were the Champions League (as high as 37.6 percent), films like The Canterville Ghost (26.1 percent), and standbys like Schillerstrasse (as high as 24.0 percent) and Verliebt in Berlin (up to 26,4 percent).

ProSiebens share for the first nine months was 11.9 percent (Jan.-Sept. 04: 12.1 percent). Top favorites included not only successful U.S. series, but blockbusters like Spider-Man (36.8 percent), Men in Black (32.3 percent) and Star Wars: Episode II (29.5 percent).

The audience share for kabel eins between January and September was up 0.4 percentage points to 5.5 percent (Jan.-Sept. 04: 5.1 percent), with particularly good ratings for Highlander (10.9 percent) and Police Academy I (9.7 percent).

N24 was the clear leader among news channels in the nine-month figures as well. The station picked up 0.3 percentage points against the previous year, to 0.8 percent. Its competitor n-tv improved only 0.1 percentage point, to reach 0.6 percent.

RTL and RTL II lose audience share
RTL lost audience share in all three periods under review. The Cologne stations September share came to 16.7 percent, down 0.9 percentage points from the year before (Sept. 04: 17.6 percent). The stations third-quarter figure was 15.7 percent (Q 3 04: 16.1 percent), and the January-to-September figure was 15.9 percent (Jan.-Sept. 04: 16.8 percent). Vox earned 6.3 percent in September (Sept. 04: 6.1 percent), 6.4 percent for the third quarter (Q 3 04: 5.7 percent), and 6.4 percent for the first nine months of the year (Jan.-Sept. 04: 5.4 percent). Super RTL had 2.6 percent in September (Sept. 04: 2.5 percent), 2.7 percent for the third quarter (Q 3 04: 2.4 percent), and 2.6 percent for January to September (Jan.-Sept. 04: 2.4 percent). For September 2005, n-tv earned a share of 0.8 percent (Sept. 04: 0.5 percent). The stations share was 0.8 percent for the third quarter (Q 3 04: 0.5 percent), and 0.6 percent for the first nine months (Jan.-Sept. 04: 0.5 percent). RTL II took a substantial loss in share for September, dropping 1.9 percentage points against the prior year to 6.4 percent. Its third quarter figure was 6.4 percent, down 1.5 percentage points from a year earlier. For the nine-month period, RTL II dropped 1.1 percentage points to reach 6.6 percent (Jan.-Sept. 04: 7.7 percent).
